Balances were used to measure weights early in Hebrew civilization. (Lev 19:36, Job 6:2) God called upon Israel for economic justice that began with proper weights and balances. (Prov 11:1, 16:11, 20:23, Hos 12:7 Ezek. 45:9) The balances in the Old Covenant were employed to ask for a fair trial or judgment for the persecuted. (Job 31:6, Ps. 62:9).

God Himself has a set of balances, and He weighs the mountains in a balance (Isa. 40:12).

On Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, the books are opened, and the Jewish Judge of all the earth, shall judge righteously. (Zech 13:1, John 5:22) Either the Jewish Messiah, the Advocate shall stand for you, or you shall be weighed in the balances. (Daniel 5:27 ,I John 2:1)
